PHP has announced a security release addressing two critical vulnerabilities, both rated CVSS v4.0 9.2. The release is scheduled for October 21, 2026, at 14:00 UTC. We are aware of and have taken action to mitigate the vulnerabilities. Further information will be released after the PHP release is published.

We're seeing an increasing number of requests matching the mitigation rules in place. As mentioned previously, all PHP sites hosted on Upsun already have an initial set of mitigations deployed for the known exploit vectors in these vulnerabilities. You don't need to do anything to get them. We'll continue to provide updates as we learn more and after the PHP release is published.

We can now confirm this Security Release is related to the recently published CVEs 2026-109618 and 2026-109619. We are in the process of rolling out updated PHP images to all upstream patched versions, which are PHP versions 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5. As this is a critical security patch, all affected containers will be refreshed to apply the updated image. We are also rolling out additional edge mitigations to cover new vectors as they are identified. Please note that if you are currently utilising an End-of-Life PHP version lower than PHP 8.2, we strongly recommend you update to a supported version to apply the security patch.

We're extending this security release to more PHP versions. PHP has provided code-backports for End-of-Life versions 7.4, 8.0, and 8.1, and our team is working to build updated images for these versions. We'll continue publishing updates here as they become available and as we begin the rollout.

We are continuing to compile and test updated image versions to apply the PHP security releases. We will roll out these new images once the testing process is complete. However, we do not presently have a timeline for these images to be rolled out across all regions and PHP versions. No action is required from customers at this time. We are in the process of testing and validating updated PHP packages for Dedicated environments, and expect to begin rollouts shortly. Please note that patches will not be available for PHP 7.3 or earlier, as these versions are well past end of life and upstream developers have not provided fixes. Our recommendation is to migrate to a supported PHP version as soon as possible if you are still running PHP 7.3 or earlier. Edge mitigations remain in effect for all dedicated environments and we continue to monitor the effectiveness of edge mitigations.

Updates for our PHP 7.4 images are now beginning to roll out. We're still working on images for PHP 8.0 and 8.1. We've refreshed affected PHP 8.2. 8.3, and 8.4 containers, most of the 8.5 containers, and we are beginning to refresh PHP 7.4 containers to pick up the update. Customers may experience some brief downtime during this process. We're also still finishing up validation and testing for the Dedicated environments and new PHP 7.4 to 8.5 packages will be deployed shortly. As a reminder customers running PHP 7.3 or earlier will not recieve updates and should plan to migrate to supported PHP versions as soon as possible. Additionally, our edge mitigations remain in place across ALL Upsun Cloud and Upsun Dedicated environments at this time, protecting against the currently known exploits for these PHP vulnerabilities, and we've released a blog with more information about the vulnerabilities and our response: https://developer.upsun.com/posts/releases/critical-php-security-patches-upsun-rollout-and-what-to-check We'll continue to keep you informed here as we progress.

Customers running PHP versions below 8.x are strongly recommended to upgrade to PHP 8 as soon as possible, but are protected by our edge layer mitigations. This incident has been resolved. Dedicated clusters running Adobe Commerce were experiencing memory shortages and instability due to PHP-FPM processes exhausting available memory. Our Ops team has not detected new occurrences since, and the incident is referenced under Adobe CSO 202609100105. Root cause on our side points to the PHP-FPM processes driving the cluster out of memory. The infrastructure hosts hosting projects in this region have been restarted by the infrastructure provider as a part of scheduled maintenance to install security patches. The sites experienced several short intermittent outages until the maintenance finished. We also had to recover several projects as they were in incorrect state after the host reboot. Customers can now use and access projects and deployments as normal. If you are still experiencing issues with access to your projects, please contact our support team.
