On `2025-05-13` We experienced an outage affecting the Bitly Public API from `18:12Z` to `18:34Z`. This affected the ability to use the Bitly site or create new links, but did not impact usage of any existing links. The root cause was an error with a newly provisioned application secret which caused a fatal API service error that didn't fail our deployment pipeline. Our monitoring systems detected the issue quickly and we successfully rolled back to restore services. We have since taken steps towards resolving root causes, including improving secrets validation and faster failure detection during service initialization.

From `16:41Z` - `23:56Z` operations on and access to user uploaded images failed. This affected user ability to add new images to QR codes and Pages, and affected display of user uploaded images on Page buttons and backgrounds. The root cause was human error by our service provider during the application of a policy change. A restriction intended for one object incorrectly applied at the bucket level. We understand the significant impact this has had and we are taking steps with our service provider to prevent this from happening again.

If you need to make a purchase, you can still do so successfully by providing a credit card as your payment method instead. Our 3rd party provider has implemented a fix for the service disruption that was causing issues with using PayPal as a payment method in our checkout flow. We have observed recovery and will continue to monitor the situation. PayPal payment methods should now be function in our checkout flow, but if you continue to encounter any issues, using credit card is still a viable workaround.

On `2024-08-14` We experienced an outage affecting the Bitly API from `15:03Z` to `15:10Z` and affecting the Bitly website from `15:03Z` to `15:31Z`. The root cause was a failure in our deployment pipeline which caused the incorrect release to be deployed. This change was immediately detected and rolled back but the failure triggered an unknown dependency loop which required a manual rollback to restore some systems. We have already taken steps to resolve some root causes and are evaluating ways to improve our ability to rollback more quickly in similar situations.

From `17:56Z` through `19:01Z` on `2024-06-18` Bitly experienced a major outage affecting Bitly Pages functionality. Preliminary root cause was a change to a CDN configuration. The misconfiguration caused all Bitly Pages to result in a 500 page during the outage. All other Bitly services remained operational during the incident.
