Critical October 2, 2026 MacOS Certification Errors on the Proton Meet & Proton Mail apps 3h 17m Desktop Apps, Mobile and Desktop Apps

Started Oct 02, 2026, 02:54 PM UTC· resolved Oct 02, 2026, 06:11 PM UTC

  1. investigating Oct 02, 2026, 02:54 PM UTC

Some users on MacOS may be seeing errors stating that our Proton Mail & Proton Meet apps are qualified as malware. This is an error, there is no actual malware threat, and we're working together with Apple to restore functionality for our MacOS users. For context, earlier today one of our developer accounts with Apple was revoked for unknown reasons, causing previously legitimate apps to be blocked at the operating system level on MacOS. In the meantime, we recommend using the webapps. Apologies for the disruptions caused by this, we will communicate further once we have more information and updates.

  2. investigating Oct 02, 2026, 04:51 PM UTC

Dear Proton community, On Friday, October 2, 2026, an issue with Apple's developer program caused Proton Mail for Mac and Proton Meet for Mac to stop opening on macOS for some users. MacOS also incorrectly flagged them as malware in some cases. Your data and accounts are safe. The apps were not compromised, and the malware warning was a false positive. While we continue to work with Apple to resolve the situation, we have also released new versions of the apps to work around the problem for affected users. If you find that either Proton Mail for Mac or Proton Meet for Mac fail to open, you may need to download and install the app again from the links below. We apologize for the inconvenience. - Download Proton Mail for macOS from https://proton.me/mail/download - Download Proton Meet for macOS from https://proton.me/meet/download Stay secure, The Proton Team

  3. resolved Oct 02, 2026, 06:11 PM UTC

We've now updated both the Proton Meet and Proton Mail MacOS desktop apps. If you're still receiving a pop-up on your device, please update to the latest version of the desktop apps. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Major June 21, 2025 Resolved: Mistaken Block of Proton Drive by Belgian Authorities 1d 23h Web Application, Mobile and Desktop Apps

Started Jun 21, 2025, 11:17 AM UTC· resolved Jun 23, 2025, 10:44 AM UTC

  1. identified Jun 21, 2025, 11:17 AM UTC

We are currently investigating a reachability issue affecting Proton Drive in Belgium, specifically when using Telnet or Proximus internet service providers. Our engineering teams are actively working to identify the root cause and are in contact with both ISPs to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. In the meantime, access to Proton Drive can be restored by using Proton VPN. All other Proton services remain fully operational and unaffected. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  2. resolved Jun 23, 2025, 10:44 AM UTC

This incident is fully resolved now. The Belgian authorities had erroneously blocked the Proton Drive domain due to an implementation error while attempting to block a specific URL. As soon as we identified the issue, our team engaged with the relevant authorities, including Belgian CERT and the Federal Police, to clarify the error. Through constructive dialogue, we demonstrated that the block should have been limited to the specific URL in question, not our entire service. As a result, access to Proton Drive was fully restored over the weekend. We also worked with the authorities to help implement corrected procedures, ensuring that any future enforcement actions target only specific content, not entire domains. This incident highlights the importance of precise implementation when authorities need to take action against specific content. We're proud to have played a role in improving safeguards going forward to protect the privacy and access rights of our users. We appreciate the professionalism shown by Belgian authorities in working with us to resolve this matter quickly and appropriately.
