# Background Network infrastructure for the Kodiak MSC consists of a core switch which interconnects the Internet service from GCI, 5 access switches and several wireless access points. # Break Down of the Problem On the morning of Monday 30 June 2025 we were contacted by staff at the Kodiak MSC stating they didn’t have WiFi connectivity. Upon investigating the issue it was discovered that the core switch had entered an error state and was no longer passing traffic. The switch was rebooted and connectivity was restored. # Target State / Goal The network should be available to customers 24/7 except during pre-defined maintenance windows. # Root Cause Analysis Since the core switch was unresponsive we were unable to determine the root cause of the switches error state, but noted this is not a common occurrence. # Develop Countermeasures Network electronics occasionally encounter unrecoverable errors that require the hardware to be rebooted, there’s no countermeasure for this. # Implementation of Countermeasures None # Follow Up / Review The device in question will be more closely monitored for the immediate future to determine if the problem is reoccurring, and if so further measures, up to and including hardware replacement, will be considered. This outage was the result of a vendor outage.
