FS1 Samba4 Upgrade - Round 2

Resolved after 16 hours 29 minutes, on June 16, 2016.

postmortem Jul 31, 2018, 05:07 PM UTC

Even with additional configuration options, the upgrade still was only partially successful (it has since been rolled back): - Created a snapshot of FS1 - Upgrade FS1 to Samba 4.2 - Restart the Samba service - Same domain SID error as before - Set the localsid for the machine to what the error log says it is expecting - Restart Samba and test mounts - Reboot server to force a remount of NFS mounts and a restart of the Samba service - Butch / Andrew unable to connect to certain drives that were accessible yesterday (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) - Roll back to snapshot - Verified that mounts are working normally again

Update timeline

  1. scheduled Jun 16, 2016, 04:56 PM UTC

I will be making another attempt to upgrade the Samba server to 4.2. To resolve the SID issues encountered last upgrade attempt, I can disable netbios and winbind support which is not being used anyway.

  2. in progress Jun 17, 2016, 09:00 AM UTC

Scheduled maintenance is currently in progress. We will provide updates as necessary.

  3. completed Jun 17, 2016, 09:26 AM UTC

FS1 has been upgraded to Samba 4.2. I have verified that drive connectivity is still OK, and that permissions appear to be working correctly. I can access shares that I am in the LDAP group, and get the expected permission denied error for shares I am not in the LDAP group for.
