Around 4pm EST yesterday Azure SQL server in the US region began to slow down and eventually fail over to backups in other regions. These secondary regions were not equipped to handle the volume of traffic which led to a degraded experience.

A data center issue in the central US region caused an outage for some SQL Database customers. Customers may have experienced high retry network errors while attempting to connect to storage. While our multi-availability zones kicked in, there were some performance impacts until this was resolved around 9:30AM EST.
