Outlined below are the facts regarding this incident. We are committed to improving the service to prevent future occurrences of this incident. Detection and Impact: On October 9th at 4:15 PM PT, Okta observability and metric systems alerted on-call teams regarding issues accessing resources in US Cell 14. Customers in this cell may have experienced errors connecting to Okta services. Customers using custom domains would experience intermittent errors and timeouts attempting to access Okta services during this time as well. Root Cause Summary: The root cause of this incident was a substantial increase in network activity that impacted the service's points, preventing customer requests from reaching the Okta service and resulting in a temporary service disruption. Remediation Steps: Upon investigation, the nature of the traffic increase was quickly identified, and mitigations to isolate the excess requests were deployed by our service provider. The team confirmed that US Cell 14 fully returned to normal operation by 4:24 PM PT. Preventative Actions: In a coordinated effort, our service provider has implemented new mitigations on its edge. In parallel, Okta has proactively applied scaling operations to both our network and infrastructure service capacity while continuously improving our observability.
