CENIC Outage History

The realization that predictive climate research could be transformed by networked compute and data resources led to a breathtaking variety of research institutes in California. The next step is to accelerate this transformation by coordinating the institutes themselves so that they can each act as force multipliers for one another and for atmospheric, ocean, and climate research as a whole. That is the purpose of UC San Diego’s GAIA Initiative.

Vastly improved bandwidth and the emergence of AI-enabled tools—such as those made possible for CENIC members with CENIC AIR and NRP—have created a wholenew era in weather prediction, climate modeling, and disaster preparedness.

As society becomes more reliant on large-scale supercomputing centers for compute and storage, the costs associated with them have become a topic of discussion. One innovative hypercluster model—a distributed one—provides an alternative approach.

As part of the CA Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative's planned evolution into its operational phase, the State has selected an Operating TPA, Skyline Technology Solutions, to assume responsibility for the network’s day-to-day operations. To support both its continuing work with the State and a broader public mission, CENIC launched GSN Inc., the parent nonprofit of GoldenStateNet LLC and Brightscape Networks.

CENIC is delighted to welcome Frank Würthwein, San Diego Supercomputer Director, as Science Advisor to the CENIC Board of Directors, starting in the 2026-27 fiscal year.

CENIC has developed CENIC Sentinel, a disaster recovery solution that can be temporarily deployed to CENIC members to restore their access to CalREN quickly during extended outages, and thus keeping our members connected.

Members of CENIC are working to improve digital literacy by supporting initiatives aimed at creating digital access for more Californians and by creating programs to enhance digital literacy once those people have been connected.
